Topic: Exposure to Wildfire Smoke

Overview: Isabel Bacarella, MPH, CIH, CSP is the Manager Safety Operations Gas Transmission & Midstream (GTM) with Enbridge since 2019. Prior to joining Enbridge, Isabel worked with PPG in specialty chemical and aerospace manufacturing sectors holding global environmental, health, and safety management roles. She earned her MPH degree from the University of Michigan in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, and Hazardous Substances Management as well as a BS degree in Marine Biology from the University of Miami. Isabel is the current Co-Chair of Women at Enbridge Houston and the Outreach Chair of the FEMINEN (women in STEM, US chapter). In her day-to-day role, she supports US and Canadian operations for Gas Transmission and Midstream which has undergone a vast amount of questionable work conditions during wildfire seasons from remote areas of Alberta, Canada to the highly concentrated New York city, where shutting down gas compression to utilities is not an option. This presentation focuses on the challenges faced to protect employees from wildfire smoke to keep operations running and the procedures they used to ensure safe work practices during high smoke seasons through the use of available air quality index data and area sampling.
